How to do keyword research for Local Business?
Keyword research is all about finding ideas. The more ideas you find, the better you’ll understand how people search for information related to your business. For your Manchester business, it’s important to find all keywords related to your business. This will allow you to create and optimize content around these keyword ideas. As a result, when people search for information related to your business, your website will appear at the top of search results.
However, it is also important to consider the search intent behind each keyword before targeting it. This will help you to create content according to the user’s needs.
What is intent and why it matter?
Intent is the reason or purpose why a user is searching for something or why he types a specific query in the search engine. What users hope to find or want to learn from that search. For example,
- If someone types “Pizza near me,” they intend to find a place close by where they can buy a pizza.
- If they search for “How to make Pizza,” they intend to learn the steps to make pizza at home.
Intent matters a lot because, based on intent, you select and target the keywords for your local business. Suppose you can’t understand the purpose behind the user query and finalize the keywords for your business. What do you think? You will rank in your target location and start getting leads. Of course not, because you have selected the wrong keywords. You will not get a ranking in your desired location. Since there is no ranking in your service area, so you won’t get leads for your business.
Essential tools for Local keyword research.
To find localized keywords for your Manchester business, I’m sharing a practical guide that we use in our Manchester agency for location based keyword research. We primarily use these tools and methods:
- Keyword research with Semrush Tool.
- Google Instant Method.
- AI ChatGPT tool.
- Keyword research with Google search console.
- Keyword research with Google Keyword Planner.
Keyword research with Semrush.
Semrush is my favorite tool, specifically for local business keyword research. The reason why I use this tool is because it allows you to perform keyword research for a single specific city.
To conduct keyword research. Follow these steps.
- Open the Semrush tool.
- Click on Keyword Overview.
- Put your primary keyword without location, select the country, and also choose the city.
Next, you will find keyword ideas in different sections.
- Keyword variations.
- Questions.
- Related keywords.
- SERP Analysis.
1. Keyword Variations.
In this tab, you will find all the possible variations relevant to your primary keyword. For example, I put the primary keyword SEO Agency, and now there are thousands of suggestions relevant to this primary keyword.
- Open the Keyword Variation tab.
- Start analysis of the variations and only pick up that are most relevant and suitable for your business.
2. Question.
If you wish to find some informational keywords then questions are the best option to explore. You can open it and select those which you find best.
3. Related keywords.
You can also find a related keywords tab, which will show you the most relevant keywords to your business. Again, you have to spend some time and find out the ones that are useful for your business.
4. SERP Analysis.
SERP analysis is the most useful feature of Semrush. It helps you to steal your competitor’s keywords. You can look at keywords that your competitors are targeting and ranking for. You can analyze these keywords and find the best one which can help you to rank and get leads. If your competitors are ranking on these keywords, these keywords likely help them get traffic and leads. So, why not target these keywords?
Analyze your competitor’s URL keywords, and you will find different keyword ideas that can be targeted straight away. With these features, you’re not only able to analyze your top 10 competitors’ keywords, but you can also go beyond and analyze more competitors who are ranking in position 11 to ownword.
Method No: 2 Keyword research with Google.
You can also call it the Google Instant method that helps you to extract Google suggestions. It is considered one of the best methods among the SEO communities because it gives suggestions that are direct relevant to your primary keyword. All you need to do is put your primary keyword in the Google and press space. You will find the suggestion.
You can see the example in the screenshot. I just write my primary keyword and press space. Search Engine shows the most relevant keyword variation of a primary keyword.
Apart from this, you can also explore the “People also search for” Section at the end of the SERP. To find out the “People also search” Section, just type your primary keyword and hit the search. At the bottom you will find out the suggestion.
Keyword Research with AI ChatGPT.
ChatGPT is the latest addition to the internet world. In a very short time, it has gained so much popularity, and now everyone uses it for daily tasks. When it comes to SEO, we can perform different tasks with ChatGPT. But now, our only focus is Keyword Research. Before going into the process, I want to make sure ChatGPT isn’t able to show search volume. However our concern is to find the ideas. Just like SEO tools, there is no one-click method that will show you tons of keywords.
You have to play with the Prompt, and according to it, it will show you the results.
For example, our primary keyword is “SEO company in Manchester”. So, according to the keywords, I will write the prompt as “SEO company in Manchester is my primary keyword. I want you to suggest all the relevant keywords to the primary keyword.”

This is how you can use ChatGPT for keyword research. Remember, the more you play with the prompt, the more refined results you will get. After getting the results, you can sort and filter out which keywords you want to target and which ones you want to leave.
Keyword Research with Google Search Console.
Google Search Console is a powerful tool for local keyword research. It provides insights into how users find your website pages in search results. It reveals specific keywords people use, which helps you understand what’s already working and where to focus on. Here is how you can use GSC for effective keyword research.
- Open your site’s Google search console.
- Click on performance and then pages.
- Open a specific page to check its queries.
- Click on queries, and you will find tons of keywords related to specific pages.
- Go through all of them and pick up those, which you want to target.
Keyword research with Google keyword Planner.
Google Keyword Planner is a free tool designed to help you discover keywords for your local business. To find the keywords with Keyword Planner, follow these steps.
- Search in the Google keyword planner.
- Open the ads.google.com.
- Set up your account.
- Open Keyword Planner.
- Click on discover new keywords.
- Select your location.
- Type your primary keywords, and you will get tons of suggestions.
This is how you can use three methods to find out the keywords related to your local business. It does not matter whether you have a single-location or multiple-location business.
